BEIJING, China – Travel to and from China is so popular these days that the nation has approved plans for a third airport in the capital city of Beijing.
The current Beijing Capital International Airport is the second busiest airport in the world, handling more than 83 million passengers a year.
The second airport, Beijing Nanyuan Airport, is a former military airfield with limited capacity.
The new airport will be less than 30 miles from Beijing’s city center and will be connected to the city by light rail.
The $13 billion dollar project will help with increasing air traffic in the region, and will be able to handle 72 million passengers a year, making travel easier for passengers visiting China.
Slated to open in 2018, the new airport will serve the rising demand for flights in and out of Beijing, as well as balance the development of the city’s northern and southern areas.
